Chapter 17

“Please, don’t do anything crazy!” Alena said.

Crazy? Cooper thought crazily. I was crazy once. They put me in a cult, and fucked with my family, and released a bunch of zombies. I don’t like zombies. Zombies make me crazy. Crazy? I was crazy once…

This circle of insanity continued in Cooper’s mind even as he paced in his living room, waiting for his mom to come back.

Alena had been trying to get through to him ever since he’d come back from scoping out one of the trucks. At first, he’d tried to lie to her, saying he didn’t have anything planned. Of course, she didn’t buy it for a second. She kept at it, and eventually, he just started ignoring her. He wouldn’t take advice from someone who would sit inside and let others do the fighting when their home and friends were under attack.

Cooper paced with his cane in one hand, using it every two or three steps, thumping it on the rug to emphasize his version of the children’s rhyme. Crazy (thump). I was crazy once. They put me in a cult (thump), and fucked with my family (thump), and released a bunch of zombies (thump). I don’t like zombies (thump). Zombies make me crazy.

A knock on the door broke his rhythm. He rushed over as Candice, not waiting, came inside. She looked at her son with a small smile, then her eyes darted over to Alena, who stood between the kitchen and living room.

Cooper nodded and gestured for them to go outside.

“What did you find out about the trucks?” Candice asked as soon as the door was closed.

Cooper hesitated and glanced over his shoulder at the cabin. Then he guided his mother out into the night until they were ten yards from the cabin door.

“I can get the keys to one of the trucks, but I don’t think I can do it stealthily. It’s going to have to be a little messier than that.”

“What do you mean?”

“Like, holding two people at gunpoint, tying them up, taking the keys, and getting the hell out of here.”

Candice sighed and shook her head. “I don’t like that. You’re sure you can’t get them without anyone noticing?”

“I mean, I can try. But the way these cabins are situated, I doubt it. Unless we wait until the middle of the night. At that point, we’re going to get noticed by guards no matter what.”

Candice blew a raspberry, still considering.

“What about you?” Cooper asked. “What did you find out about Leroy and Kayla?”

“Leroy’s not in the hospital. Kayla is in some bunker with other teenagers — locked in there, essentially. But I know where it is now. It’s that long building over there that looks almost like a barn.” She pointed across the property, toward the building that they couldn’t see because it was too dark and the structure in question was blocked from sight by other buildings. “But my concern right now is with Leroy. He must be in the Big House, but I don’t know why they haven’t released him.
